Course Content

· Language (Mandarin)

According to your level and requirement the language training programmes can incorporate training in all four skills – Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

I will be focusing on the practicalities, from having a friendly conversation or making a simple telephone call to more complex tasks, such as making a speech at a conference. Vocabulary and grammar are taught in context.

· Cultural Awareness

In order to enable you to communicate more effectively I will also provide background on the social, political and business issues and conventions in China. The emphasis is firmly on situations that you may encounter in real life.

By the end of this class, students will be able to ask directions; travel comfortably on public transport(e.g. taxi); or buy a wide variety of products, bargain with vendors, buy tickets for events or transportation, and hold basic but polite conversation with persons of any age (as well as find a bathroom anywhere in China!). In addition, students will have greater understanding of Chinese culture and customs. Students will be introduced to Chinese characters, with particular emphasis on recognizing signs that are likely to be encountered in public places.

Flexibility in the duration of lessons is possible, although typically this will be approximately 1 hour 45 minutes.
